Add Scott Brown to the list of people you’ve seen naked. Pencil in that all-American gent right below Paris Hilton and Pamela Anderson; just above the guy who streaked the football field in high school.
That’s right, there was a time when your truck drivin’, windbreaker wearing, ‘real man’ Republican senator was voted “America’s sexiest man,” and asked to strip down past his skivvies for a centerfold pic in Cosmopolitan. Needless to say, he said yes.
The year was 1982 and the good ol’ 22-year-old was just trying to make ends meet. Law school at Boston College had a fat price tag even in his day. According to the rave review Cosmo published on the politician in September (accompanied by suggested slogans like Vote for Brown. He Has One Hell of a Stimulus Package) he was cramming for exams up to the minute he dropped his pants.
But does that make it ok?
The Boston-based, Blue Mass Group blogged about the photograph, referencing Wolf Blitzer of CNN’s report:
“Blitzer asserts that if it had been a woman, it would have been harmful to her campaign. Gergen agrees that such a photo shoot would be a burden to a woman’s campaign. But not so for Scott Brown. He states Brown’s nude photo shoot has not harmed his campaign, it has only created a buzz about him.”
But seriously, if Coakley, or any woman candidate for that matter, had posed naked (or even in a modest bikini) there would be talk, and a lot of it. She wouldn’t be taken seriously, or at least she’d have to fight to be. Regardless, the photo would be a controversy to plaster the covers of Star magazines nationwide.
But for Scott Brown, it seems like the Blue Mass Group was right, the photo has created some buzz, but certainly not the bad kind. Arguably, the picture may have actually helped the campaign. Let’s face it, at 50 Brown looks pretty darn good, and who doesn’t want a real hunk of a senator? Especially when you consider the competition. Or maybe it’s the simple idea of this all-American BC kid, gleefully accepting some compliments and a nice chunk of cash to put towards tuition.
Regardless of their reasoning, people don’t seem to mind. Without inhibitions last Tuesday, independents across this “blue state” ran to cast their vote for wait WHO? That’s right, a Republican. And none other than Scott Brown, “Sexiest Senator of 2010.”
